Last updated: April 2026 | Editor: Krister Ross, CitationLab AS

Google AI Overviews is no longer an experiment. It is now the default view at the top of search results for an ever-growing share of queries — and it is well documented that AI Overviews steal clicks from organic results.

What are Google AI Overviews, technically?

Google AI Overviews is powered by Google’s Gemini model and uses a process called search grounding: the model searches Google’s index for pages ranking for the query, pulls in relevant passages, and synthesizes an answer with source citations.

Six factors that determine who gets chosen as a source

  1. Directness of the answer. Gemini prioritizes content that begins with a direct answer.
  2. Accuracy and subject-matter precision. Specific numbers, names, dates, and technical terminology signal precision.
  3. Passage quality over page quality. Gemini retrieves specific passages, not entire pages.
  4. E-E-A-T signals. Who wrote the content? Is the author a subject-matter expert?
  5. Structured data. FAQPage schema increases the likelihood that Gemini picks up FAQ pairs.
  6. Internal links and semantic cohesion. Pages that are part of a clear topical universe signal topical authority.

Concrete checklist

  • Verify that the page ranks for the target query (top 10)
  • Ensure the first 100–150 words contain a direct answer
  • Install FAQPage schema with 3–5 naturally phrased questions
  • Add Article schema with author attribution and dateModified
  • Build internal links to and from the page from related subject-matter content

FAQ

Can you end up in AI Overviews without ranking organically? No. AI Overviews is powered by Google’s search index via search grounding. Without an organic ranking, Gemini will not evaluate the page as a source.

Do AI Overviews reduce the click rate on my site? Yes, for zero-click questions. But for complex questions, visibility in AI Overviews can actually increase clicks because the source link is prominently displayed.

Is there a difference between English and non-English content for AI Overviews? Yes, significantly. High-quality content in less-saturated languages currently has a window of lower competition.
