How to Write Content That AI Answer Engines Cite

April 1, 2026

Last updated: April 2026 | Editor: Krister Ross, CitationLab AS

There is a very specific reason some content gets cited by AI and other content doesn’t. It comes down to one thing: answerability.

1. Lead with the answer, not the build-up

The first paragraph after the H1 should contain a direct definition or a direct answer.

2. Use naturally question-based structure

Treat H2 and H3 as if they were questions. “What is topical authority and why does it matter?” is far more citable than “Topical authority.”

3. Definitions are gold

Include a definition paragraph early on every subject-matter page.

4. Facts and numbers pay off

Content with concrete numbers, studies, and specific claims is cited more often than vague content. Always attribute numbers to a source.

5. FAQ is not just for Google — it’s for every AI

FAQ sections with naturally phrased questions and direct answers are one of the most effective AEO techniques. Add FAQPage schema.

6. Clear, scannable formatting

Use H2/H3, lists, bold text, short paragraphs, and tables.

7. Write for authority, not for keywords

Keyword density is irrelevant for AI citation. What counts is subject-matter depth, precision, and originality.

Checklist: Is your content ready for AI citation?

  • Do the first 100 words directly answer the primary question?
  • Is there a clear definition early in the text?
  • Are there at least 3 concrete facts, numbers, or examples?
  • Is there a FAQ section with 3–5 questions?
  • Is FAQPage schema installed?
  • Is an author bio available?
  • Is the content original?

FAQ

Do long articles work better than short ones for AI citation? Not necessarily. A precise 800-word page that answers directly is cited more often than a vague 3,000-word page.

Should I update old content for AEO? Yes. Add FAQ sections, update the opening paragraph, and install relevant schema markup.
