In short: An AEO-first strategy with SEO as a complementary layer

Last updated: April 2026 | Editor: Krister Ross, CitationLab AS

Three acronyms, one field, infinite confusion. SEO, AEO, and GEO keep showing up interchangeably — and many people use them as synonyms. They are not.

The definitions

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is optimization for high organic ranking in search result lists — primarily Google.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is optimization for being chosen as the answer by AI-driven answer engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the broadest term: optimization for being included in answers generated by generative AI models.

The recommendation: Go AEO-first

In 2026, our recommendation is to build an AEO-first strategy, with SEO as a complementary layer. A piece of content designed for AEO will typically also do well in SEO. But an SEO-first piece is not necessarily citable by AI.

FAQ

Do I need separate strategies for SEO and AEO? No, but you need a single integrated framework. A good framework like CAVIS integrates all three dimensions.

Are GEO and AEO the same thing? Almost. GEO is the broader term, while AEO is more specifically targeted at AI answer engines.
