AI Visibility Audit: A Framework for Diagnosis and Prioritization
What is an AI visibility audit?
An AI visibility audit is a systematic review of every factor that influences a business’s visibility in AI search. It gives you a precise picture of the current state and identifies the highest-priority opportunities.
The four modules of the audit
Module 1: Technical audit (1–2 hours)
1.1 Crawler access
- Open robots.txt — are GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and GoogleOther allowed?
1.2 llms.txt
- Test: https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt — does it exist?
1.3 Schema markup
- Test 10 key pages in Google Rich Results Test
- Do they have Organization, BreadcrumbList, Article, and FAQPage?
1.4 Technical SEO baseline
- Core Web Vitals in GSC, canonical tags on every page
Module 2: Visibility audit (2–3 hours)
2.1 Define 20–30 representative prompts 2.2 Run them in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity — record mentions 2.3 Calculate citation rate 2.4 Identify who gets mentioned instead of you
Module 3: Content audit (2–4 hours)
For every page with more than 100 monthly visits — check: direct answer in the opening paragraph, FAQ section, FAQPage schema, Article schema, dateModified current, question-based H2s.
Module 4: EEAT audit (1 hour)
Check: named author, author profile page, Article schema with author, complete About page, external professional publication.
Output: Prioritized action plan
- Critical technical errors (fix immediately)
- High-priority content gaps (fix in month 1)
- EEAT actions (fix in months 1–3)
- Long-term initiatives (quarterly)
