Google rolled out AI Overviews globally in 2024. For marketers, it is critical because it fundamentally changes search behavior: users who get a satisfactory answer in an AI Overview click through to sources far less often. Zero-click rates are rising.
Being included as a source in AI Overviews requires a strong ranking position on relevant keywords (most AI Overview citations come from the top 10), solid E-E-A-T signals, and content that is clearly structured as a direct answer to the question.
AI Overviews do not appear for every search — Google primarily uses them for informational queries (what is X, how do I Y) and less often for transactional or navigational searches.
