Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Generativ motoroptimalisering

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is a discipline within digital marketing that optimizes content and digital presence to be included in answers generated by generative AI models. GEO and AEO are often used interchangeably, but GEO places particular emphasis on content-production strategy rather than technical optimization.

GEO was popularized through academic research at Princeton and Georgia Tech in 2023, where researchers analyzed which content properties increased the likelihood of inclusion in AI-generated answers. Key findings: statistics and numbers, authority citations, fluent prose, and persuasive framing all increased visibility.

In practice, GEO overlaps with AEO, SEO, and content marketing. What sets GEO apart is its focus on the internal properties of content: is it authoritative enough, concrete enough, and written in a way that makes it easy for an LLM to cite and paraphrase?

GEO is especially relevant for content producers and publishers, while AEO is a broader term that includes technical optimization, link building, and entity building.
