Topical Authority
Faglig autoritet
Definition
Topical authority is the depth of subject-matter expertise and content breadth a website has within a specific topic area, as assessed by search engines and AI models. A site with high topical authority covers a topic broadly and deeply — with many content pieces that answer every relevant question within the field.
Google and AI models reward topical authority because it signals that the site is the authoritative source, not a generalist that happens to have written a single article on the topic.
Topical authority vs. domain authority
Domain authority is a holistic measure of a domain’s strength, driven primarily by link authority. Topical authority is narrower and deeper — it’s about subject-matter coverage within a single topic.
A site can have low domain authority but high topical authority within a niche. Conversely, a large media outlet can have high domain authority but low topical authority in specialized fields.
For AI citations, topical authority is often more important than domain authority, because AI models evaluate the subject-matter depth and relevance of content to the specific question.
How AI models build topical authority assessments
AI models assess topical authority through three main mechanisms:
Training data. Models like GPT-4, Claude, and Gemini have learned patterns from billions of web pages. Sites that consistently appear as sources within a topic in the training data build up an implicit authority profile.
Live search grounding. Systems like Perplexity and Google AI Overviews use real-time search to find sources. Here, the subject-matter coverage, internal link structure, and semantic cohesion of the content are evaluated in real time.
Internal links and topic structure. AI crawlers follow internal links and map how a site organizes its topics. A dense internal link network between related pages signals topical authority more strongly than isolated articles.
Topical map: 5 steps to build topical authority
Step 1 — Define the core topic. Choose the primary subject area where you want to build authority. Be specific: “AI visibility” is better than “digital marketing.”
Step 2 — Map all subtopics. Use search data, competitor analysis, and subject-matter insight to identify every relevant subtopic, question, and issue.
Step 3 — Create a pillar-cluster structure. Build a pillar page for the core topic and dedicated cluster pages for each subtopic. Link them systematically.
Step 4 — Fill every gap. Produce content for every identified subtopic. Prioritize questions with high search intent and low competition first.
Step 5 — Update and expand continuously. Topical authority is not static. Update existing content regularly and add new subtopics as the field evolves.
FAQ
Can a new website build topical authority quickly? Faster than traditional domain authority, yes. Topical authority can be established within 6–12 months through concentrated content production in a narrower subject area.
How many pages are required for topical authority? There is no universal minimum threshold, but you should cover all essential subtopics. For a narrow field, 30–50 pages may suffice. For a broader field, 100–200+ pages may be required.
Is topical authority the same as information architecture? No, but they are closely related. Information architecture is the structure. Topical authority is the outcome — the authority status AIs and search engines assign to the site within a topic.
