Zero-Click Search

Null-klikk-søk

Zero-click search is a search where the user gets the answer directly on the search result page — via featured snippets, AI Overviews, knowledge panels, or AI answer engines — without clicking through to any website. The share of zero-click searches in the AI search era is rising sharply.

The term originated in the SEO community to describe featured snippets and knowledge panels, but it has become dramatically more relevant with the rise of AI Overviews and AI search engines like Perplexity. In Perplexity, almost every answer is zero-click by definition.

Zero-click search challenges the traditional traffic model in which ranking position = clicks = traffic = value. In a zero-click world, the value shifts to visibility and brand recognition — being mentioned and cited, even if the user doesn’t click.

The strategic response: don’t avoid zero-click content. Be the source that gets cited. A mention of your brand name in 40 percent of AI answers to industry-relevant questions is more valuable than a click-based search position on page two.

Frequently asked questions

Is zero-click search bad for businesses?
It's bad for traditional traffic metrics, but not necessarily for business outcomes. Businesses that are cited as sources in zero-click answers build authority and brand recognition — even without the click. The conversion strategy needs to adapt.
