Startup Guide to AI Search Visibility: The TRUST Model

The world of search has changed fundamentally. Ranking on Google is no longer enough.

Large language models — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude — now answer users’ questions directly. They cite, recommend and synthesize. They decide who is authoritative and who doesn’t exist. And they operate by entirely different rules than a traditional search engine.

This doesn’t mean SEO is dead. It means SEO has a new layer — and those who understand both layers simultaneously are the ones who will win AI visibility going forward.

This guide introduces the TRUST model — a complete framework for building and measuring AI visibility, developed by Krister Ross and CitationLab AS. The model is built on top of the familiar SEO stack and is designed to be iterative — not a one-time checklist.

The AI Landscape: Not All Models Are Equal

Treating ChatGPT and Google as the same thing is a strategic mistake. The various AI platforms work very differently under the surface.

Two Fundamentally Different Mechanisms

RAG — Retrieval Augmented Generation: The model retrieves current information from the web in real time. Much of the traditional SEO logic applies here: crawlability, authority, relevance.

Parametric knowledge — Training data: The model answers based on patterns learned during training. Visibility is achieved by being consistently represented in quality data sources the model has learned from.

You can rank number one on Google and still not exist in ChatGPT. AI visibility requires a holistic system — and that is exactly what the TRUST model provides.

The TRUST Model: Five Layers for AI Visibility

The TRUST model is a practical framework for working systematically with AI visibility. Each layer addresses a distinct dimension of how AI systems evaluate, select and present content.

T — Truth & Authority

E-E-A-T is not just Google’s framework — it is how LLMs evaluate who can be trusted. Models like ChatGPT and Gemini have learned to associate authority with documented expertise, source breadth, consistency over time, and third-party validation.

Concrete actions:

  • Clear author profile with documented expertise (bio, LinkedIn, byline)
  • Source references and citations to credible third-party sources
  • Organization data: About page, contact info, registration number, address
  • Schema markup: Person, Organization, Article, FAQ, HowTo
  • Third-party validation: Wikipedia, Wikidata, Google Knowledge Panel
  • Consistent brand identity across all digital surfaces
  • Mentions in authoritative industry publications and media

R — Readability & Structure

LLMs don’t read pages the way humans do. They chunk, weight and synthesize. A paragraph of 12 sentences can produce chunks where half is useful and half is noise. It is the useful chunks that determine whether you are cited.

The Answer First principle: The answer should come first — then reasoning, context and details.

Before: “Many people wonder what best practice is for meta descriptions in 2025. It’s a good question, and the answer depends on several factors…”

After: “A good meta description is 150–160 characters and contains the primary keyword naturally integrated with a clear CTA. Here’s what you need to know…”

Chunking-friendly structure:

  • Each paragraph should contain one complete idea or factual claim
  • Start with the most important point (don’t build up to it)
  • 2–4 sentences per paragraph, rarely more
  • Don’t end halfway — LLMs prefer complete thoughts

llms.txt is a new standard that lets you instruct AI agents about which parts of your website are most relevant. Place the file at root level: yourdomain.com/llms.txt.

Optimization for RAG systems:

  • Write content that is citable in itself — a sentence should be liftable out of context and still make sense
  • Keep factual claims clearly separated from editorial judgments
  • Use explicit dates and version labels where relevant
  • Cover breadth within a single document where possible — this increases the probability of being retrieved across fanout queries

U — User Intent Alignment

AI models don’t just evaluate whether a single document answers a question — they assess whether a source is consistently relevant within a topic domain. Topical authority is more valuable than keyword coverage.

Build topical authority:

  • Pillar-cluster architecture: one in-depth pillar page per topic domain, supported by cluster articles
  • Semantic coverage: include related terms, synonyms and adjacent concepts
  • Consistency over time: updated content signals active expertise

S — Source Diversity & Visibility

Your AI visibility is the sum of every place you exist digitally. LLMs were trained on a massive collection of publicly available data. Parametric knowledge is a snapshot of your digital presence across all platforms.

Critical data platforms for LLM training data:

  • Wikipedia and Wikidata — strongest single point for parametric anchoring
  • LinkedIn — professional identity and expertise signals
  • GitHub — technical entities and project descriptions
  • Industry publications and trade media — guest articles and mentions in authoritative sources
  • Podcasts and interviews — cross-validate expertise
  • Quora, Reddit, Stack Exchange — professional discussions crawled by LLMs

Co-citation and co-occurrence: Get mentioned alongside relevant industry players. LLMs use co-occurrence as a signal for topical relevance and authority networks.

  • Publish llms.txt at your domain root
  • Ensure robots.txt allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended
  • Keep sitemap.xml up to date

T — Testing & Iteration

You can’t optimize what you don’t measure. The final dimension of TRUST uses the CAVIS framework — CitationLab’s proprietary framework for measuring AI visibility across platforms.

Monitoring workflow:

  1. Define 20–50 representative prompts that mirror the most common questions in your domain
  2. Run the prompts regularly (weekly or bi-weekly) against ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity
  3. Analyze the responses: is your brand mentioned? In what position? With what framing?
  4. Identify content gaps: which prompts yield no visibility?
  5. Measure changes over time and link observations to content changes

Before you know what to do, you need to know which state you’re in. The most important diagnostic distinction is between mentions (you are named) and citations (you are used as a source with a link).

Entity Optimization: From Keywords to Entities

LLMs think in entities. Search engines think in keywords. An entity is a concept, a person or an organization that can be identified unambiguously — regardless of wording.
