Gemini uses search grounding: it retrieves from the Google search index and synthesizes an answer. Organic ranking in Google is a prerequisite for being evaluated as a source.
Key difference from other AI search engines
For ChatGPT and Perplexity, you can be cited without ranking in Google. For Gemini/AI Overviews, organic Google ranking is the baseline requirement.
