Google AI Overviews
What is Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews (previously called SGE — Search Generative Experience) are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of Google Search for many informational queries. They are powered by Google’s Gemini model and use search grounding against Google’s index.
How it works
When Google identifies that a query would benefit from a synthesized answer, Gemini generates a summary based on relevant web pages from the search index. Sources appear as clickable links.
The baseline requirement: organic ranking
AI Overviews is powered by Google’s existing index. Without organic ranking, you are not a candidate source. The top 10 is typically the minimum.
Six concrete actions
- Keyword ranking: Rank in the top 10 for relevant queries
- Featured snippet optimization: Gateway to AI Overviews
- FAQPage schema: Prioritized by Gemini for question-answer pairs
- Article schema with author: A critical EEAT signal
- Content freshness: dateModified actually updated
- Passage optimization: Clear, self-contained sections
What AI Overviews does NOT do
- Paid placement does not exist
- Citation is editorial, based on relevance and quality
- AI Overviews does not appear for every search — only where Google judges it useful
Rollout status
AI Overviews appears for a growing number of searches across markets. Informational and factual queries are the most common triggers. Transactional and navigational queries trigger them less often.
FAQ

Is AI Overviews the same as AI Mode? No. AI Overviews is a feature within regular Google Search. AI Mode is a separate, dedicated search mode where every query is handled by AI.
